This interesting view from 360cities.net (my new favorite toy) is an alleyway in the mud-brick walled city of Shibam Hadramawt (or Hadramaut), in Yemen. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the earliest “skyscraper” city in the world. Although Shibam Hadramawt has been occupied since the 3rd century A.D., the houses have been rebuilt many times. Some date from the 16th century.
This is really fascinating and I didn’t know this place existed until I found it on 360cities. Go into the spherical panorama and look around. About 180 degrees behind this view you’ll see a boy riding a donkey, as well as the intricate scrollwork on the windows far above him.
Very cool stuff!
