One week from today, I will be at Wacken Open Air, the world’s largest heavy metal festival! The excitement is building, so you can forgive me if I have Wacken on the brain…and in any event it’s an excuse to do another panoramic view of the festival! This amazing shot was taken from the “Sky Bar” above the festival site, sponsored by Jägermeister, which is a gondola on a crane about 100 feet in the air (or so, I’m terrible at judging those things). I’ve never been up here, but from what I understand there is a lottery system where you can win a seat at the Sky Bar. A friend of mine–Rab, who is no longer with us–got up in the gondola in 2009, the first time it was offered. This particular picture was taken at the 2011 festival.

Because this is not from, if you want to see the full thing on the native site, go to this link, then click “Sky Bar” from the menu at the bottom. There’s also a cool looped sound effect of drunken Germans singing “Yellow Submarine” with “Jägermeister Bar” substituted!

As amazingly cool as this is, I’m not entirely certain I want to go up here. Obviously the patrons are strapped in tightly and I’m sure they couldn’t do it if there was any significant danger, but being 100 feet above Wacken, and pounding Jäger shots, doesn’t sound like my idea of a good time. I’d much rather stick to my beers in the beer garden.

There may be another Wacken-related post or two before I leave, so sorry in advance!
