I picked this track, “Deadly Sleep” by the German power metal supergroup Iron Savior, for today (October 3) specifically because it comes from the 1999 album Unification, and today is the celebration of the unification of Germany in 1990. Not that Iron Savior or Unification has anything to do with the reconciliation of West and East Germany after the Cold War, but Iron Savior is a German band, formed by Kai Hansen (Helloween/Gamma Ray) and Piet Sielck (producer for various power metal albums) and has also featured some Blind Guardian personnel among its shifting members.

Iron Savior is classic sci-fi power metal. Their albums, eight so far, are concept albums telling a high SF story of a giant sentient spacecraft, the Iron Savior, which is somehow connected to the lost continent of Atlantis. I’m not sure of the ins and outs of the story, but you don’t really need to know because hey, it’s power metal, and it’s there to be enjoyed! “Deadly Sleep” is one of the highlights on Unification, and its sound evokes heavily the great German power metallers of the 1990s, which themselves owe a lot to the Judas Priest sound of the 80s.

Enjoy, happy Unification Day to Germany, and Shabbat Shalom to everyone! \m/
