This morning’s Metal for Friday post is unabashedly, unashamedly, in-your-face epic power metal of the highest order. Luca Turilli, the Italian guitarist who was one of the founding members of Rhapsody (later known as Rhapsody of Fire), put out three solo albums under his own name, and this amazing track “War of the Universe” opens the best and most epic of them, the science fiction themed Prophet of the Last Eclipse. It’s also presented here with the intro track, “Aenigma,” which together form a seamless steel slab of epic symphonic metal.
Prophet of the Last Eclipse, a 2002 release, is one of my favorite power metal albums. It eschews the usual swords-and-fantasy milieu, which was a particular obsession of Rhapsody, for a science fiction, space-opera type of vibe. Consequently the music sounds a little more modern and technological than do many power metal albums that reach into the past for rhythms and structure. I recently lent this album to a friend who had never heard of Luca Turilli, and he was hooked instantly. Luca has done two other solo albums, but this one, in my opinion, is the best.
I hope you have a great weekend–it’s a long weekend for many in the U.S.–and a peaceful Sabbath! \m/
