Because today is the 560th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople, I thought it fitting that my next Earth post should be somewhere in the old Byzantine (and later Ottoman) capital. They don’t have street view in Turkey, unfortunately, but I did find a spherical panorama.

This is the Hippodrome, which in Byzantine times was used for horse and chariot racing–it was to Byzantium what the Colosseum was to Rome. It was quite dilapidated at the time of the Turkish conquest in 1453, but was restored over the centuries and is now a tourist attraction.

Incidentally, not to spoil anything, but this is the spot where the climactic battle occurs in my book Zombies of Byzantium.
