& Frequently Asked Questions
I have a Ph.D. (2017) and M.A. (2012) in American environmental history from the University of Oregon, a Juris Doctor (1998) from Tulane University Law School, and an M.A. (1993) in history from the University of New Mexico. My Ph.D. dissertation was titled Ten Years of Winter: The Cold Decade and Environmental Consciousness in the Early 19th Century.
Take a class from me! I have several online courses available at various price points. Or, if you want to send me money directly, I have a Ko-fi account.
I teach at a charter school in the Portland, Oregon area, middle school: U.S. History (6th Grade), Premodern World History (7th Grade, basically medieval history), and Modern World History (8th Grade). I also teach courses for private clients such as retirement communities and other institutions.
I practiced commercial real estate law in the Portland, Oregon area for 14 years. I was not a litigator but rather a business/contracts lawyer. I no longer do any legal work.
Yes, but has not been updated for a while. Email me with a specific request.
It is a lengthy and complicated process, and does not occur in a vacuum (meaning, the selection of each video topic affects what will, or won't, be selected next). It depends not merely on what I'm interested in covering, but what I already know about the topic, how much research will be involved, what the sources (books, articles or documents) are likely to be and how easy they are to find, what kind of visuals I can find, and what other coverage there is (or isn't) on YouTube of the topic. I made a video in May 2024 that explains my process of video creation, which includes a section on topic selection. That's here.
Scroll down to the bottom of this page and click the "Contact Me" button. I do consider all suggestions, but keep in mind I can only make a few long deep-dive videos per year, and my to-do list is already very long.
Yes, and people ask me frequently for such suggestions, but it often helps for me to know about your interests. History is a big field. If you want to discuss reading suggestions, scroll down to the bottom of this page and click the "Contact Me" button.
I wish I could accommodate all the collaboration requests that I receive, but I already have so many projects of my own going on that it is unlikely I'll be able to take on something else.
As with book collaboration requests, my schedule is so busy that I must be very picky about which additional projects I take on. It's not impossible, but I am not at the moment looking for research work.
Most of the recent videos (made from 2023 onward) have music credits either listed at the end of the video, or in the descriptions. Some of the pieces I've used have been composed specifically for my videos, such as those by German musician George Kay.
To the best of my recollection, here are the metal bands whose shirts I've worn in videos: Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Blind Guardian, Ensiferum, Van Halen, Bolt Thrower, Mastodon, Nile, Avantasia, Nine Inch Nails and Dismember. I have also worn several shirts related to the Wacken Open Air festival.
Yes, and yes. I own three typewriters: two Royal Deluxe typewriters from 1935 (I think the second may be from 1937), and a 1948 Remington Rand. They generally work, although one of the Royals needs a key replaced. I do use them on a regular basis. Some of my books have been composed on these typewriters.
I have been a guest on several podcasts, and I consider media appearances on a case-by-case basis depending on several factors, including whether I'm a good fit for the show as well as scheduling. Contact me via the blue button at the bottom of this page and tell me about the show or channel you have in mind.
No. While I did make a series of videos in 2022 about the JFK assassination, that was only one of numerous historical topics I've covered. I have not revisited the topic since 2022 and have no desire to do so. I have many more important things to do.
No. That is utter nonsense, of course.
Unfortunately no. Zombies of Byzantium, originally published in 2012, fell out of print when the publisher, Samhain Books, went out of business. I have a few personal copies, but I'm down to the last few that I want to keep for myself.
