Video, WOW

A white-knuckled ride through the streets of Rome, on a motorbike! [video]

One wild ride begets another! After I posted that video of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, I found a more contemporary but equally amazing view of another great city, that being Rome. And this is the only way to see Rome: clinging white-knuckled to the back of a motor scooter roaring through the streets!

I speak from some experience. The last time I visited Rome, in 2006, I stayed with my friend Francesco, and that’s how we got around the city. As you can see from this video, the streets of Rome are anarchy on wheels. Stoplights are optional. The lanes painted on the street are suggestions. There are two kinds of pedestrians, the quick and the dead. And if you’re on a motorbike in Rome, the #1 rule is, avoid stopping for any reason!

In this video you can see a number of cool landmarks of Rome whirling by at high speed, including the Vatican Wall, the Circus Maximus and, very distantly, the Colosseum.

  1. Don’t they have real motorcycles in Rome? They look like they’re going like 35 mph. Even still, I’m a bit jealous. I wish I could go see Rome right now.

    • They do, but it’s much easier to get around on a smaller scooter because you can slip between what euphemistically passes in Rome as “lanes” of traffic.

Rome is amazing and epic. If you go you won’t regret it!

This video and its attendant post, which I did back in June 2013, is so simple but yet so awesome. Rome is a wonderful city and you definitely do see a lot from the back of a motorbike. This is also quite a hair-raising ride! Enjoy it again.
