After a brief hiatus, my World War II spy serial, The Armored Satchel, returned this afternoon on JukePop Serials with a brand-new chapter. In Chapter 30, Max finds himself in a windowless room with a microphone, a stenographer, and various Allied intelligence agents staring at him through a one-way mirror. He’d better spill everything he knows about Nehrig, the German weapons scientist, or his espionage career is headed nowhere fast. Then, he gets some shattering news, which may change the whole course of the story.

This chapter started life as a relatively routine bit of “plot business” to take care of, but rapidly became a turning point in the story. Exactly how it did that I’m not sure, but I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out. I’m also glad of the opportunity to flesh out Caldwell and Ferguson, the Allied intelligence guys, as real human characters and not the imperious stone faces they’ve been up until now. I’m really looking forward to where the story goes from here, and I hope you are too!
There’s a bit of World War II trivia in his chapter: Max witnesses a V-2 rocket attack. I racked my brain for a way to turn this into a Pynchon reference (Gravity’s Rainbow), but I just couldn’t work it in.
It’s hard to believe I’ve been at this for over 30 weeks and there’s still no end in sight. The Armored Satchel remains in the top 30 and finished September in its highest position yet. Thanks again to all the fans who continue reading and voting.
