I’m on a semi-hiatus for the Christmas holidays, but just as my festivities began, I got word from Samhain Horror, the publisher of my previous horror books, that they want to publish my new novel, Doppelgänger! This is going to be my third book for Samhain, and I’m really excited about it…so I thought I would announce it here first! The book will likely hit the shelves in early 2015.
Doppelgänger is a real departure for me. It’s not about zombies, but in fact is a classic Gothic-style haunted house tale, with a twist. It’s set in Victorian-age New York, and it’s a throwback to the great spooky stories that come from and hark back to that era. Here is the teaser for Doppelgänger:
Anine Atherton thinks she’s got it all. Transplanted from her native Sweden to the drawing rooms and gas-lit parlors of Gilded Age New York, she’ll want for nothing in the lavish row house her rich new husband bought for her. Only Anine’s house doesn’t seem to like people very much. The caretaker hangs himself in the entryway. The maid drops dead her first day on the job. Anine herself is becoming anxious and terrified, and not just because of the ghostly laughter she hears in the middle of the night. Her gentle, charming husband is slowly turning into a domineering sociopath. The aristocratic women of Fifth Avenue continually snub her. And whatever shadowy entity lives in her house, it can read Anine’s mind and use her darkest secrets against her. When Anine learns the last woman to live in the house went insane, she fears she’s next in line—and the downward spiral of madness and murder has already begun!
If you’ve been reading this blog closely over the past few months you may have seen a couple of posts about the “making-of” this book, most notably my attempts to write from the perspective of a 19th-century woman, and my call for beta readers (which was graciously answered). I don’t really publicize works-in-progress nearly as much as other writers do, at least until they’re ready for publication. But, now you know that this book is coming, and I hope you’re all excited for it!
Just to recap my publication schedule: Zombie Rebellion, the second of my zombie books, will be out in May 2014, only five months away, and then Doppelgänger will follow within less than a year. Of course, my book published in February 2013, Zombies of Byzantium, continues to be available.
Thanks for everyone’s support, and have a great holiday season!
