After doing a couple of power metal songs, I thought this Friday I’d kick off your weekend with some gruesome, heavy balls-out death metal. Six Feet Under, the band formed by former Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes, specializes in very brutal, hard-hitting death metal, but it also has sort of a cartoonish and playful edge. That’s certainly the feeling I get from this song, “Revenge of the Zombie.” It was a minor track off SFU’s 1997 album Warpath, which was really the breakthrough for this band. I first heard it on a Metal Blade Records compilation in the late 90s which in fact introduced me to Six Feet Under. Since then I’ve seen them several times at Wacken Open Air, and they always put on a fun, crowd-pleasing show.
The song is pretty brutal (lyrics are NSFW) but Six Feet Under is one of the most enjoyable death metal bands I think you can find out there. This particular performance was captured on video in Berlin in May 2014, proving that, nearly 20 years later, Six Feet Under can still shred. If they ever make a movie out of Zombies of Byzantium, this song should be somewhere on the soundtrack!
Have a great weekend, and Shabbat Shalom! \m/
