Morbid Angel is an amazing and classic death metal band. This is the first track from their 1993 album, Covenant, which was ground-breaking at the time it came out. I’m choosing it today for two reasons, and both of them center around a lyric in this song: “In rapture, I am reborn.”

Today, I’m completing the two-year-long process of formal conversion to Judaism. Though the terms “rapture” and “born again” are associated with Christianity (and only certain forms of Christianity), it’s not too far beyond the realm of reality to say that as I complete my religious conversion process, I am, in fact, reborn in a spiritual sense. Secondly, today is May 29, the anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks, and the end of the Byzantine Empire. In a loose sense “Rapture,” divorced from its theological Christian meaning, could potentially mean the end of the world. But the end of one world usually marks the beginning of another. On May 29, 1453, the world itself was “reborn,” at least in a sense; if you read this article I wrote a long time ago you may understand why.

But most of all I’m sharing this because it’s a great song from a great album. Have a terrific Friday a terrific weekend, and Shabbat Shalom! \m/
