This weekend is the 26th annual Wacken Open Air heavy metal festival, the great “metal Woodstock” that occurs in the farm fields outside the tiny town of Wacken, Germany on the same weekend every year. If you read this blog regularly, or have been reading my Twitter recently, you no doubt know that I’ve been to the festival many times, starting in 2000, and while I’m not there this year Wacken Open Air is seldom far from my heart. In honor of the festival going on right now–which I’m watching from afar via social media and a dodgy, not-always-working live stream–I thought I would create a round-up of all the Wacken articles I’ve done on this blog, of which there are many. It’s no substitute for being there, but reliving the Wacken experience online can still be a lot of fun.
Here are all my past Wacken articles, broken down into categories.
My Actual Eyewitness Wacken Experience
Although Iv’e been to Wacken 12 times, most of those trips occurred in the years before I started this blog. My last trip, however–and I mean “last” in probably both of its meanings–occurred last summer. Here is my “Wacken diary” from 2014:
The Last Wacken, Chapter I: Wine and Resolutions in Hamburg (August 6, 2014)
The Last Wacken, Chapter III: Dusty Sunset and a Stairway to Heaven (August 8, 2014)
The Last Wacken, Chapter VI: All Good Things… (August 11, 2014)
“Where The Wind Withers Memory” A Photo Farewell to Wacken Open Air (August 12, 2014)
Articles About Wacken Itself: Geography, History and What It’s Really Like
W:O:A has featured several times in my ongoing series on photos and geography, as well as stand-alone articles about the cultural gestalt of the festival and what it’s like to go there. These are some of my favorite articles on the subject because they’re more than just “I was there.”
Wacken in Winter: A Different View of Germany’s Heavy Metal Mecca (January 27, 2015)
The Beginning of a Legend: The Very First Wacken Open Air Festival (August 24, 2013)
Earth Panorama: The Wacken Open Air Sky Bar, Wacken, Germany (July 23, 2014)
Mud, Beer and Metal: A Taste of Wacken Open Air Camp Life (July 24, 2014)

Explore Wacken Open Air in 360 Degrees…On Your Computer! (July 24, 2013)
Wishing I Was There
I’ve written a fair amount of articles that stem from an “I wish I was there” sort of vibe. But even in these I try to find something substantive to stay, so they’re worth looking at.
My Strange Weekend: Wacken in Exile (August 5, 2012)
The Great Heavy Metal Ritual: Wacken 2015 is Almost Here (July 23, 2015)
Wishing I Was There: Wacken Open Air Begins Today (July 31, 2013)
Wacken Open Air: A Post-Mortem From Afar (August 4, 2013)
Wacken-Related Performances and Media
I have often featured performances from Wacken festivals, and related to them, in “Metal for Friday” posts, as stand-alone articles, or reviews. Here is a sampling; I can’t guarantee I got them all.
Retro Metal DVD Review: “Armageddon Over Wacken 2003” (August 10, 2013)

Metal for Friday: Edguy “Tears of a Mandrake” (June 19, 2015)
It’s safe to say Wacken is a big part of my life, even if I’m not planning to go myself for a good long while. It’s also safe to say that I’ll continue to write and blog about the festival. I hope you’re along for the ride!
