My heart lives at Wacken: A round-up of all the past W:O:A articles on my blog.

This weekend is the 26th annual Wacken Open Air heavy metal festival, the great “metal Woodstock” that occurs in the farm fields outside the tiny town of Wacken, Germany on the same weekend every year. If you read this blog regularly, or have been reading my Twitter recently, you no doubt know that I’ve been to the festival many times, starting in 2000, and while I’m not there this year Wacken Open Air is seldom far from my heart. In honor of the festival going on right now–which I’m watching from afar via social media and a dodgy, not-always-working live stream–I thought I would create a round-up of all the Wacken articles I’ve done on this blog, of which there are many. It’s no substitute for being there, but reliving the Wacken experience online can still be a lot of fun.

Here are all my past Wacken articles, broken down into categories.

My Actual Eyewitness Wacken Experience

Although Iv’e been to Wacken 12 times, most of those trips occurred in the years before I started this blog. My last trip, however–and I mean “last” in probably both of its meanings–occurred last summer. Here is my “Wacken diary” from 2014:

The Last Wacken, Chapter I: Wine and Resolutions in Hamburg (August 6, 2014)

The Last Wacken, Chapter II: An Epic Norwegian Saga of Camp Supplies and Dusty Beer Gardens (August 7, 2014)

The Last Wacken, Chapter III: Dusty Sunset and a Stairway to Heaven (August 8, 2014)

The Last Wacken, Chapter IV: Lemmy Lives, Slayer Rocks, And We Receive a Startling Proposition (August 9, 2014)

The Last Wacken, Chapter V: Megadeth, Avantasia and (Almost) the End of an Era (August 10, 2014)

The Last Wacken, Chapter VI: All Good Things… (August 11, 2014)

Articles About Wacken Itself: Geography, History and What It’s Really Like

W:O:A has featured several times in my ongoing series on photos and geography, as well as stand-alone articles about the cultural gestalt of the festival and what it’s like to go there. These are some of my favorite articles on the subject because they’re more than just “I was there.”

Wishing I Was There

I’ve written a fair amount of articles that stem from an “I wish I was there” sort of vibe.  But even in these I try to find something substantive to stay, so they’re worth looking at.
