Metal for Friday: Mercenary “Welcome the Sickness” [video].

Mercenary is one of those workhorse bands that’s been around forever, but for some reason don’t get all the visibility they deserve. I first discovered this Danish power/thrash metal band by complete accident. In 2005 at Wacken Open Air my friend and I were walking around the festival site and just happened to walk past the Party Stage where Mercenary was starting their set. We were utterly mesmerized by their performance and loved every minute of it. Though they were not on one of the main stages, Mercenary’s performance was a highlight of Wacken that year for us, and we eagerly made sure we were up front when they returned in 2008. Their combination of crunchy riffs, power-metal-style vocals and thrash metal sensibilities is a catchy mix.

I was surprised to discover that Mercenary has been around since 1991. Fortunately they’re still going 25 years later. This song, “Welcome the Sickness,” is from their most recent studio album, Through Our Darkest Days, which came out in 2013. If you haven’t checked out this band yet, you definitely should!

Have a terrific weekend, and Shabbat Shalom! \m/
