Metal for Friday: Manowar “Mountains” [audio].

Manowar have been one of the stalwarts of the “true metal” scene since their formation in 1982. Bassist Joey DiMaio, the driving force behind the band, was once a roadie for Black Sabbath, and he’s made a name for himself as one of the purest exemplars of the heavy metal image. Manowar is controversial among metal fans–you either really love them or you think they’re utterly ridiculous–but one can’t escape the conclusion that they’re fantastic musicians. This track, “Mountains,” a rather slow song from their 1984 album Sign of the Hammer, showcases both the subtlety and the power of the band’s approach. Even if you’re not a hard-core metal fan, you might enjoy this song.

I chose to showcase Manowar today because this week came the news, in the form of a press release from the band, that they are embarking on a tour called The Final Battle to “say goodbye” to their loyal fans. Nearly everyone has interpreted this as an announcement that the band will call it quits after the tour. This will be a great loss to the metal world, but after 34 years of living the life, it’s entirely understandable. Horns up for Manowar, the Kings of Metal, and best of luck in whatever they choose to do next.

As for you, I hope you have a great weekend. Shabbat Shalom! \m/
